When it comes to portable propane heaters, you have three different choices, depending on your needs.   They are actually categorized  by size. The first is a small personal propane heater.  This unit is designed for heating small spaces such as a tent.  The second choice is your larger outdoor patio heaters.  These models can heat a patio area up to 175 square feet.  The final option is your portable propane heater for large areas.  Theses units can heat areas well over 3,500 square feet!

When buying a small propane heater, here are some of the features and facts, you should consider:  An anti-tip feature.  Small indoor propane heaters, should have this feature for Safety! When you are  using these propane units to heat an enclosed space, safety is all important.  It is quite easy to tip or bump these small heaters in a blind or tent, so this feature is a must. Another option needed is an oxygen depletion system.  If the oxygen level drops low, the heater would automatically turn off.  Also small propane heaters should also be approved by the appropriate agency. ( UL or CSA for  Canada ).  Take care when purchasing a used portable heater, as the safety information originally included may not be available!  Also check for any recalls on that particular model.  Sometimes  safety issues are discovered after the units have been in use for several years.

When purchasing an outdoor propane patio heater, here are some things to consider:  Quality of parts.  I have had my cheap patio heater wear-out and rust.  More expensive heaters will last longer and perform better.  Look for high gauge steel parts and longer warranties.  If you plan on using your outdoor propane heater a lot,  you might consider a high end unit.

Ignition systems vary in heaters.  Some require a small battery to light.  Other use a striker type system, that does not require batteries.  A nice feature to have, when starting your heater, without looking for fresh batteries!

Energy efficiency.  Propane heaters vary in their efficiency.  Look for units that offer efficient use of propane.  The average outside unit uses about a tank-full of propane for every 10 hours of operation.

Insect Proof.  Another feature I wish I would have had on my cheap patio heater.  Better models have a insect proof design, that eliminates small insects clogging the gas lines.  I had to take my unit apart to clean the spider webs inside of the unit.  The propane unit would not light otherwise!

When buying a large propane space heater, the features are the same as the smaller units.  Look for a oxygen sensor, an anti-tip feature for starters.  Other things you might consider:  whether  unit can be wall- mounted or free standing, and if the unit has a  thermostat to adjust the room temperature.  Some models will have a digital read- out for room temperatures.  Most of these units are considered ventless propane heaters.  Meaning they do not require any outside venting of exhaust.  Direct vent heaters are usually permanently mounted.
